Obituary message

Steve Szkotak, a versatile and prolific Associated Press journalist, died Tuesday, May 31, at home in Richmond, VA. He was 65.

Steve was an avid reader who loved music, fishing and travel. He was passionate about his family.

Before joining AP’s Richmond bureau in 2002, Steve spent 13 years at the Daily Hampshire Gazette in Northampton, Mass. For a decade before that he worked as a reporter for United Press International in New Hampshire and Rhode Island.
He worked his way through college graduating from Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University.

In addition to his wife Mandy, he is survived by a daughter Molly Hugel and her husband Johnny of Richmond, a son Frederick of Bend, Oregon, brother Christopher and wife Kathy of Syracuse, sister Mary Konsistorum of Annapolis, MD, sister Julie Murphy and husband Bob of Camillus, NY, several nieces and nephews and in-laws.

Even as he fought his illness he was able to fulfill his dream of walking daughter Molly down the aisle on May 14.

A burial ceremony is planned for Saturday, June 25 at 11:30 a.m. at The First Congregational Church of Chester, 334 Skyline Trail, Chester, MA 01011 at the church Steve married Mandy in 1980.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve’s memory may go to the James River Association, http://www.jamesriverassociation.org or to the First Congregational Church of Chester in MA.
