Obituary message
PENDERGRAST, Barbara Connaughton went to be with long lost family and friends on Thursday, July 28, 2016, surrounded by those here on earth. “My greatest joy in life was being a mother and mentoring other mothers through my nursing career. I only hope God has a similar plan for me. I’ll be there when you get there-we will sit on a Maui beach with warm breezes, sip a tropical drink with a joyous song in our hearts because that is what life is about. I was given a wonderful life and now it’s time to give it back. The bucket list is complete and I no longer choose to battle a cancer that doesn’t know when to quit – despite my Irish stubbornness.” Barbara’s loved ones include her husband of 44 years, David Linton Pendergrast; daughters Amanda Pendergrast Garthright and Kathryn Pendergrast Stevens (Robert); sons Michael Edward Pendergrast (Jennifer) and Patrick Linton Pendergrast (Megan). Grandchildren were her pure treasures and include William, Zoe and Lucy Stevens; Holden, Gavin and Avery Garthright; and Aiden and Liam Pendergrast. Barbara is also survived by her mother, Mrs. Pauline Connaughton of Woodbridge, VA; sisters Lorraine Connaughton, Diane Halloran (Michael) and Carol Earle (Joseph); brothers, Edward Connaughton and Paul Connaughton (Mary Beth); and many beloved nieces and nephews. Barbara was preceded in death by her father, Edward Joseph Connaughton of Woodbridge, VA. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Barbara traveled extensively during her father’s military career. She settled in Virginia in 1964 considering it her forever home. Barbara graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia in 1971 and served as a nurse in the United States Navy. She had a career that spanned 44 years providing nursing care for new mothers. Barbara loved fine wines, the color lavender, and traveling particularly to Italy, Maui and Las Vegas. However, she was just as content being at home and cooking for her large and loving family. The family will meet with friends on Thursday, August 4th from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Affinity Funeral Service, 2720 Enterprise Pkwy, Richmond, Virginia 23294. A rosary will be said at 6:30 pm on the night of visitation. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am Friday, August 5th at St. Bridget Catholic Church, 6006 Three Chopt Road, Richmond, Virginia 23226. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the American Cancer Association in her name.

Amanda, my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family. { know that the love I see you shower on your own children is a result of the warmth and affection from your own mom. She gave you an example to follow in her life. I am so sad for your loss.Janet Howell
