Thore, Betty L. (McDaniel), 86, of Hopewell Va., died peacefully on Wednesday, July 11, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Howard Daniel Thore. She was born in Petersburg, Virginia on September 15, 1931, to Mary L. Sutherland and Arthur Eric McDaniel, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her children, Sherian L. Beasley and her husband Emmett, Howard Kirk Thore and his wife Kyle, and Patricia Thore Auton and her husband William E. Auton; her grandchildren, Nicole B. Campbell (Richard), Eric L. Beasley, Kristopher K. Thore, and Kristen K. Thore; and her great grandchilren, Casey S. Campbell, Dylan H. Campbell, Hailey S. Beasley and Landon L. Beasley. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Hilda B. Thore and her brother-n-law Ralph McCulley and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. She also leaves behind her devoted cousins, Kathleen W. Volk, Hopewell, VA and Barbara Cox of Mt. Pleasant, SC and her cherished best friend Lou Kaleyta, Prince George, Va. From a young girl Betty always put family first and her family meant the world to her. She was one of the first employees at Firestone Synthetics in Hopewell. When she retired from Firestone, she went on to become one of the first female Deputy Sheriffs in Virginia. Betty retired from the Chesterfield Sheriff’s Office as a Sergeant, a rare achievement for a woman at the time, after serving the county for twenty five years, and proudly worked with Sheriff Emmett Wingo for most of those years. Gardening was her next love and she could and did grow just about anything. In her memory, the family asks that you buy a flower , give a flower, or plant a flower for someone. The family would like to thank Junior from Woodlawn Baptist Church Adult Sunday School for his many spiritual visits to both Mom and Dad. We would also like to thank Ms. Emma Dennis for her loving care of Mom. A Celebration of Life will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Hopewell, Virginia, 505 Cedar Lane, on Monday, July 16 at 1:00. A reception will be held following the service in Ribble Hall. Donations will be accepted in Mom’s name to either St. John’s Episcopal Church or West Hopewell Presbyterian Church, 2602 Wise St., Hopewell, VA 23860.
