Carey Wilkerson Wietharn
May 27, 1960 – March 1, 2020
Carey Wietharn of Richmond, Virginia passed away peacefully at VCU Medical Center on Sunday, March 1, 2020 at the age of 59.
Carey was born in Dodge City, Kansas in May 1960 to Stan and Lynn Wilkerson. She grew up in Topeka, Kansas with her mother, father and brother Mark. She graduated from Topeka High School in 1978 and went on to study at the University of Kansas where she was an active member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She subsequently transferred to Washburn University in Topeka and graduated from there with a degree in Paralegal Studies in 1987.
Carey married Kent Wietharn in June 1988 and together they raised a son, Kas. She was a devoted mother to Kas, whom she felt was her greatest blessing in life. Her caring, kindness, and generosity will live on in him. Her warmth, wit, and charm will never be forgotten, and she will be remembered as a loving mother and mentor. She is survived by her son Kas, husband Kent, parents Stan and Lynn Wilkerson, brother Mark, sister-in-law Lisa, and nieces Morgan and Kate.
Carey’s compassion for children led to many years of volunteering and service to the Court Appointed Special Advocate organization until late 2019. Creating something unique and beautiful was important to her. This could be seen in her love of cooking, her handmade cards and gift tags, and in her everyday life. She lived a life full of grace and humility; requesting there be no formal memorial service.
Her family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses of VCU Medical Center and Massey Cancer Center for their commitment and tender care of Carey during her difficult illness. It is the family’s wish that memorial donations may be made in Carey’s name to the American Cancer Society.
Per Carey’s request there will be no public memorial service. She would like those who knew her to cherish their memories of happy times together.
We will miss Carey immensely, she faced a tough challenge and through it all she was most concerned about how others were doing. She is in a better place now.
