Claudette Gertrude Shelton Stuart

March 5, 1940 – January 7, 2024

Claudette Gertrude Shelton Stuart, 83, of Midlothian, VA went to be with her Lord and Saviour Sunday, January 7, 2024. Reuniting in her heavenly home with her devoted husband of 57 years, Norman Ray Stuart.

Claudette was preceded in death by her parents, Elliott Clyde and Hettie Gertrude Clarke Shelton; and loving siblings “Sissy” Margaret Gertrude Dyer and “Bubba” Thomas Randolph Collier. She leaves to cherish her memory her dearly loved children, Kenneth Ray Stuart and Debbie Southard (Mike); four granddaughters, Brandy Throckmorton, Ali Moorehead (Darren), Rachel Mathes (Jon), and Katelyn Stuart, and four great-grandchildren; Grace, Gareth, Levi and Amelia. She will also be remembered lovingly by her siblings, Elliott Clyde Shelton Jr. and Frankie Shelton Chambers. Her vibrant spirit will also be missed by her sisters-in-law, Sally and Anne; as well as loving nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and her wonderful “Team Claudette” caregivers Faye and Ann.

Claudette’s heart overflowed with love for her family and friends, creating a legacy of kindness, caring, and devotion that will live on through them. Her granddaughters and great-grandchildren were the “sunshine” of her life. MeMe reveled in every cherished moment she spent with them; always creating lasting memories filled with love, laughter, and happiness. Claudette lived an abundant life with a passion for traveling, especially to the serenity of the beach and the beauty of her beloved Tennessee Smoky Mountains. She was proud of her career at both Miller and Rhoads Inc. and Ukrop’s Supermarket Inc., serving as personal secretary to John West of the M & R family and James Ukrops. An innovative small business pioneer, Claudette established a personal grocery shopping and delivery service, The Market Basket, in collaboration with Ukrop’s Supermarkets. She served her loving and loyal customers for more than 30 years, never considering them anything except wonderful friends and extended family. The Market Basket was a labor of love for Claudette and her family bringing lifelong friendships. To all who knew and loved her, she will always be remembered for her vibrant spirit, unlimited generosity, and kindness to all.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 at Ramsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 5900 Hull Street Rd N, Richmond, VA 23224 with a reception to follow. Private interment will be held in Powhatan Community Cemetery, Powhatan, VA.
