A local of Richmond, VA, Dan grew up camping, playing little league sports, holding records on the community swim team, and serving in the boy scouts. After graduating from Hermitage High School Class ’86, Dan attended West Point Prep School and served in the United States Army. After serving, he played as a defensive end for Texas Christian University and The University of Hawaii-Manoa where he graduated in 1992. He was invited to stay on staff to coach football at UH-Manoa which sparked his travel bug and he told fond memories of the beauty of the islands. Dan enjoyed spectating of any kind, but especially Nascar with his son Austin, VCU Men’s Basketball games, and The Richmond Flying Squirrels. For the last 20 years, you may have heard Big Dan on WRVA advertising his local business, Colonial 1st Mortgage, and advising on mortgage and market trends. Dan was an advocate and fundraiser taking a special interest in Special Olympics Virginia, Autism Society of Central VA, Central Virginia Food Bank, and Tech 4 Troops.
Dan will be missed greatly by his family and many members of the Richmond Community.
A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 26, 2023, at 1 pm at Wave Church RVA-Glen Allen.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Special Olympics Virginia or Autism Society of Central Virginia.
Dan was a great friend and teammate. I’m glad we got to see each other in California with many of our teammates from TCU.
Sending peace and love to Daniel’s family and friends. May his sweet memories and grace fill the difficult days ahead.

Scott and I will miss Dan and his bigger-than-life personality! He was a good friend and neighbor to us and I will especially miss seeing him in the mornings as I worked in the yard and he would stop to chat or make a positive comment on his way out to work.
The Dougherty Family has always been devoted to making the world a better place. Danny will be missed but remembered for the good he gave to others. Prayers and love to his family and friends.
I’m so sorry for your loss. He was such a giving person. He would light up a room . Peace be with the families.
My condolences to Dan’s family and friends. I pray you find comfort and strength during this difficult time. Sending love and light.
Dan was a wonderful person. He was my mortgage partner and took such care with his clients that he served, often times thinking outside of the box to find ways to really help people. We are so sorry to hear of his passing and are sending love and light to his other friends and family during this difficult time.
I am so sorry to hear this news. Prayers to Ginni and the kids. Dan was very helpful to me when we started Colonial 1st. I knew it would be in good hands when I left. He was very proud of all his children and would brag on them each time we would talk.
Godspeed Big Dan
Dan was a great teammate and friend at TCU and so glad over the last few years we shared many fishing and other trips together. Always just a phone call away he cared deeply about his friends and family. Godspeed Dan and keep everyone in line up there!

I first met Dan in 2005 when he hired our car service. He must have liked me because he continued to call for the next 18 years. They teach you in chauffeur training to never become too familiar with the client, always remember you are there to serve them, not be their friend. Well Dan made that impossible. Once he knew you, you were his friend for life. I will always be able to hear that booming voice say “Randy you are my guy, I love you brother”. That was Dan. He loved freely and openly. He was my client, but did as much if not more for me and my family than I did for him. Multiple home loans for myself and my kids with very generous terms. When he found out I went to UVA there were trips together to many games, including including Coach K’s last game at JPJ. Great time in spite of Dan inviting a huge Duke fan. You had to be prepared for the unexpected with Dan. He called one Friday night and asked for a ride home, be done in 15 minutes he said. We get halfway home and he asks, do you have any plans for the rest of the evening? Ginni is visiting my daughter at JMU, can you take me there tonight? So off we went to JMU. He found out I had a business trip to Las Vegas coming up. He told me I am on the right list at the hotel, pick any show, I will get you front row seats. And he did. I am sure he did many favors for everyone in his life. One of the best life lessons I learned from Dan is don’t take the relationships in your life for granted. Focus on what you can do for others and not what they can do for you.
Dan, you are my guy, I love you brother. Ginni and family, I am your guy, please don’t hesitate if I can help in any way.
