Donald Alonzo (Makavali) Gaines

December 14, 1962 – April 15, 2024

Donald Alonzo (Makavali) Gaines, a beloved family man with a contagious laugh and a fondness for keeping it real, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2024, surrounded by his loved ones. 

Donald was born on December 14, 1962, in Richmond Virginia to the late Wallace Gaines and his beloved mother Celestine L. Gaines.  He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at a young age and was a member of Great Hope Baptist Church where he loved attending Sunday School.  Donald was a pillar of strength and joy, radiating instant happiness wherever he went.  His love for family was unparalleled, finding the greatest joy in the company of his children and grandchildren.

 Donald relocated to Northern Virginia for a while, where he met and married his wife, Robin Savage.  Upon his return to Richmond, he began employment with Gumenick Properties. He loved the interaction with his fellow employees and the residents and earned their admiration and total respect. He was an avid sports fan and a die-hard Raiders fan.

 In times of hardship, his unwavering commitment to honesty and integrity shone through, earning him the reputation of being the embodiment of “I said what I said.”  His boldness and sincerity, and inspired all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Donald was preceded in death by his father, Wallace Gaines, and his infant son, Joshua Gaines. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unweaving authenticity to cherish his memories his loving mother, Celestine L. Gaines; six children Donovan Gaines, Timothy Cousins, Kenneth Salvage, Christina Gaines, Fannie Reckard, and Tiffany Smith (Josh); three sisters Kawanda Smith (Andre), Lisa Adebenro (Adewale) and Malkia Gaines; six grandchildren Chamoni Brown, Danasia Parson, Aaron J. Gaines, Jayla A. Williams, Callie Smith and Alycen Hicks; one god-son, Nathan Scott Howard (Michelle); and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends. Donald loved deeply and he will be greatly missed by all.

 May his essence live on, bringing comfort and solace to those who mourn his passing.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Affinity Funeral Service, 2720 Enterprise Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23294. A memorial service will follow at 10 a.m. in the funeral home chapel  Interment will be private.
