Donald Lee Callis, Sr., 79, of Newport News, VA passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Memorial Regional Hospital in Mechanicsville, VA surrounded by his children.
He was born to Floyd and Ida Callis in Newport News, VA on August 15, 1943. He managed various gas stations and grocery stores but later decided to pursue a career in law enforcement and retired as a federal police officer from Camp Peary in Williamsburg, VA.
He is survived by his children, Tricia, Donald Jr., April, and Timothy; his grandchildren, Katie, Hannah, Olivia, Alexis, Tyler, Jace, and several great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Mel. His was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ida and his sisters, Gazelle and Delaine.
He was hard working, kind, patient, quiet, and humble. He was an avid reader of newspapers and books. He enjoyed watching sports (especially UVA and Washington) and The Weather Channel. He loved humor and keep his loved ones laughing. Snacks were his favorite type of food. Above all, he was always there when you needed him.
Interment will be private.
