Obituary message

Doris Harlow Quarles, 90, of Ashland, died June 21, 2016.

A native of Ashland, Doris was born on January 7, 1926, daughter of Clyde Ellis Harlow and Eleanor Perrin Harlow. She attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland graduating in September of 1945. Doris then began a dedicated career in education as an elementary and high school teacher. Later she was guidance counselor at Patrick Henry High School, earned a Masters in Education from the University of Virginia in 1965, and served as guidance counselor at Henrico High School, retiring in 1988.

Doris married Harry Dewitt Quarles, Jr., in 1946, following his service with the Marines in World War II. She is survived by one son, Dr. Harry Dewitt Quarles, III and partner Mary Mills Barrow of Oak Ridge, TN; three grandchildren, Sarah Hamlett Quarles of Knoxville, TN, Anna Ruth Quarles and partner John Hager of Ashland, VA, and John Wiley Quarles of Nashville, TN; and one sister and brother-in-law, Janice and John Baylor of Glen Allen. Most recently the birth of great-grandson, Xavier Quarles Hager, brought immense joy to Doris.

Many thanks to all her former students, friends, and colleagues for visits at her residence at Hanover Manor during these past several years.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in the name of Doris Quarles to the Ashland Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 667, Ashland, VA 23005-0667.
