Dr. Anthony Doss

June 10, 1940 – December 10, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Dr. Anthony Doss, age 83, of Bristol, VA on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at Deer Meadows Nursing Home in Abingdon, VA. Born on June 10, 1940, in Columbo, Sri Lanka, Dr. Doss’s life was a testament to compassion, dedication, and the enduring love of family.

Dr. Doss completed his medical degree at the University of Ceylon in 1967 before crossing oceans to pursue a psychiatric residency at Mary Immaculate in Queens, NY. It was there that he met his first wife, Mary, marking the start of the first branch of the Doss family in America.

His medical journey led him to Hazard County, KY, where he served as an attending physician. Driven by a sense of duty and a passion for community, he explored the region on his days off and discovered the town of Marion, VA, where he decided to establish his family. In Marion, his firstborn, Princy, came into the world, followed by twin sons, Manoj and Vinodh, two years later. Dr. Doss then opened a small practice in Chilhowie, VA, addressing the healthcare needs of a community lacking other physicians. The commitment to his community led to the expansion of his practice to Bristol, VA, at which time his beloved, youngest son, Danny, was born.

Upon retiring from his medical practice, Dr. Doss found joy in spending time with his family in Canada and pursuing his passion for writing. Later in life, he remarried to Lucita Chapman, finding renewed happiness and companionship.

Dr. Doss is survived by his children, Princy Doss (Scott Fullen), Dr. Vinodh Doss (Taryn Doss), Dr. Manoj Doss (Andrea Doss), and Danny Doss (Eve Burnett); and his cherished grandchildren, Vinoj Fullen, Ravit Doss, and Vedha Doss. He is also survived by his stepson, Chad Chapman.

Dr. Doss leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication, remembered fondly by his brothers, Dr. Arulraj Doss (Montreal, CAN), Mervyn Doss (Toronto, CAN) and Kumar Doss (Toronto, CAN); his sisters, Vimala (Sri Lanka) and Vanaja (Sri Lanka); brother-in-law Doyle Pillai (Sri Lanka); sisters-in-law Dr. Baleswary Doss, Renee Doss, Bernadette Doss, and Vasanthy Doss; nephews and nieces Chrishi, Roshan, Jagadesh, Arun, Danusha, Suresh, Lourdes, Maria, Shehan, Pradeep, and Julie; and his special friends,  Al Blevins, Jane Blevins, and Joel Forbes.

Dr. Doss was preceded in death by his father, Saverimuthu; his mother, Mary Flora;  brother, Patrick; sister Violet; second wife Lucita; brothers-in-law Raj and Xavier Raj; and his special friends, Woodrow and Ann Poe.

His legacy lives on through his loving family and the countless lives he touched through his medical career.

A private viewing to honor Dr. Anthony Doss will be held at noon on Saturday, December 16 at Affinity Funeral Service in Richmond, VA, with interment to follow privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Save the Children, an organization working to improve children’s education, health, rights, and livelihoods in poverty-stricken areas in Sri Lanka through various programs and initiatives.
