Elizabeth “Betty” Van den Heurk
Van den Heurk, Elizabeth “Betty”, of Ladysmith, passed away on March 3, 2020, three days shy of her 85th birthday. She was the matriarch of our family and will be deeply missed. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jeanne Carter. She is survived by her daughter, Heidi James (Michael); her grandchildren, Laura Whelan (Johnny), Mary Beth Libby (Chris), Michael James, and Matthew Carter; and her great grandchildren, Claire, Eilís, and Ryan. There are many nieces and nephews across the country who loved her.
She was an independent, confident and determined woman. These qualities helped her overcome many obstacles in her life to achieve success. Based on her experiences, she had wisdom and knowledge that she enjoyed sharing freely. Often considered the fun and adventurous one, she loved to laugh and see her family blossom.
Throughout her life, she engaged in many careers across various fields. In particular, her work as a Police Dispatcher at Mary Washington College was one that made her proud. She enjoyed sharing her knowledge and perspective with students while ensuring they were safe and successful. During her 50 years in Ladysmith, she also made many lifelong friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Emmanuel Episcopal Church at Brook Hill in Richmond 1214 Wilmer Ave, Richmond, VA 23227. Arrangements to celebrate her life will be made at a later date.
Damn.
We are all sadden by her loss. We send our Condolences to all the family.
So sorry for your loss… Grand lady?
It has been many years since we last saw each other. I would not have any photos of my wedding without Betty being there to take them. We worked together at Standard Paper then. She was a great friend. I send God’s comfort to the family. Marion
