Gerald “Jerry” J. Marsh

January 10, 1939 – December 28, 2023

We are saddened to report that Jerry Marsh passed away early in the morning on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

Jerry is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joan, son Guy, and sister Rhea.  He is survived by daughters Cynthia Schulte and Wendy Arroniz, brothers-in-law Gregory Schulte and Inigo Arroniz, and grandchildren Joseph, Alyssa and Kaylin Schulte; and Natalia, Elias and Mikel Arroniz.

Jerry was born in Salem, Oregon to Gabriel and Anne Marsh.  He spent his entire childhood in Salem and attended St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy. As a child and teenager, Jerry participated in the 4-H Club and the Boy Scouts.  Jerry loved hiking and camping, especially with his older brother Dan. After high school, Jerry went on to obtain a Bachelors of Business at Willamette University and moved to Seattle, Washington to pursue a career in Medical Appraisal and Underwriting.

In Seattle, Jerry met his wife of 54 years, Joan L. Steckler.  The couple had three children, Guy Robert, Cynthia Anne and Wendy Marie.  During the time the family lived together they enjoyed frequent camping trips across the country throughout the National Park system.

Late in his career, Jerry moved to the East Coast to pursue job opportunities and then moved to Austin, Texas, where he and Joan resided for over ten years and where Jerry finished his career.  Upon retirement, the couple moved to Spokane, Washington where they enjoyed a beautiful new forested landscape and Jerry continued to pursue his love of hiking, often hiking through the wooded natural public lands behind his home.

Desiring to be closer to children and grandchildren, in 2014, Jerry and Joan moved to San Diego, California and later to Richmond, Virginia.  In 2022, Joan passed away and Jerry joined his beloved wife of 54 years less than two years later, in December of 2023.

A private memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 9505 Gayton Road, Henrico, Va. 23229.
