Gloria J. Potteiger

February 14, 1942 – November 20, 2023

Gloria J. Potteiger, 81, Glen Allen, VA, passed away on November 20, 2023, in her home.  She was born in Philipsburg, PA on February 14, 1942.  She married Coleman R Potteiger (Red) on December 26, 1958, in Mechanicsburg, PA. 


Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Coleman R Potteiger (Red) of 42 years; father, Leslie J Ross; mother, Mary E Gardner; sister, Joan Workman; son, James E Potteiger; triplet grandsons, Dustin Lee, Timothy Michael, Charles Russell Smith; great-grandson, Kameron Jackson; sons-in-law, Herman Stuart Chiles and Steven Smith Sr; grandson, Robert Smith; granddaughter, Stephanie Smith; and grandson, John Lewis, Sr (Christina).


Gloria is survived by her three children: Coleman R Potteiger II (Rusty) (Ginny), Cindy Chiles-Smith (Dennis), and Lorrie Potteiger; her grandchildren, Christina Lewis (Dave), Bryann Chiles (Melissa), Emma Apple, Niki Smith (wife of Robert), Leslie Wilson (John), Steven Smith, Jr (Chealsie), Daniel Powers (Shauna), Lauren Jackson, and Mary Barnes; great-grandchildren, Brittany, John Jr, and Amber Lewis, Coleman Wilson, Kyleigh Chiles and Mia Rodriguez, Aubree, Alaina and Berkley Powers, Kevin Jackson Jr, Whitten O’Connor, Weston Smith, Maddie, and Mason Smith; great-great-grandchildren, Brianna Lewis and Bryson Jones; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. 


Gloria had many jobs. A wife, mother, grandmother.  She worked for Grants, Walgreens, Hallmark, East Coast Gas Station, Fox Photo Booth, cook at Lakeside Baptist Day Care, Ben Franklin and as a caregiver.  Gloria and Red had a Cotton Candy and Popcorn booth at the State Fair of Virginia and various festivals. She coached a Jr/Sr youth bowling league at Sunset Bowl and was secretary and treasurer of several bowling leagues. She also was the bookkeeper for her husband and son’s construction company, R & R Builders. She loved camping and fishing with her family.  Gloria loved going to play Bingo and an occasional trip to Charlestown. Gloria loved to knit and crochet. She loved her two dogs, who she considered to be her children, Bandit and Peanut. Gloria supported her whole family through many tough losses over the years.


A graveside service will be held at Mt Vernon Memorial Cemetery in the coming weeks.
