Gustavus Zachary Armstead

April 15, 1955 – May 6, 2023

Gustavus Zachary Armstead, 68 years old received his call to sing in the Heavenly Choir on May 6, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne Armstead; father William Armstead; and youngest sister Minister Shella Tillery.

Gus was educated in the Richmond Public Schools System. He was baptized at an early age under the pastorate of Dr. Robert L. Taylor and became a member of the Fourth Baptist Church. His passion and love of singing for the Lord began with the Youth Choir. Over the years he sang with several choirs and Quartets, namely the Male Chorus, R.L. Taylor, and L.B Young Choirs of Fourth Baptist Church, as well as choirs at the Hood Temple A.M.E. Zion Church, to name a few. Gus also organized a Capella group named “FAITH”. Faith became very popular, performing at special events and concerts throughout the city and vicinity.

Gus loved to cook and was employed at several popular Richmond area restaurants such as “O’ Toole’s”, “The Roosevelt”, “Book Binder” and “Hawke’s” to name a few. When he wasn’t cooking and singing, football was his favorite pastime. The Pittsburgh Steelers was the one and only team for him.

Gus leaves to cherish his memories his mother, Helen J. Armstead; his son, Mario Jones; ten grandchildren, Jordan Leroy, Jordan Powers, Mario Redmon, Anna, Jahamarian, Jerrmiah, Kimariah, Lassiter, Mariah, and Terrion Jones; four sisters, Cynthia King (Stoney), Charlene Rooks, Belinda Archer, and Luella Armstead; ten nieces and eight nephews; a host of great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, among them, devoted friend, Tanya Brown.
