James E. Black Jr.
June 22, 1954 – January 27, 2023
James Edward Black, Jr. died peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2023, at VCU Medical Center after several years of devoted personal care from his loving daughter-in-law, Angela.
James was born on June 22, 1954, to the late James Edward, Sr., and Edna Jones Black. He joined the Parrish Hill Baptist Church at an early age and was active in his youth.
After attending Charles City County Public Schools, James took over his father’s masonry business, J. E. Black Construction Company, in the mid-1970s. He continued this tradition by working with his son, James III, and managed the company until his retirement.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a former member of the Ruthville Gun and Rod Club, Inc. He loved the outdoors and maintained his paternal ancestral home, Black’s Beach, his entire adult life.
James’ presence commanded attention, and his charm won over almost everyone he met. He had countless friends and nicknames, including Junior, Jimmy, Jimmy Junior, Blue, and Biscuit.
He is survived by his devoted family: daughter Sonia Black; son James III, and his wife, Angela. The joy of his life, his five grandchildren who affectionately called him “Big Daddy,” Laila, James IV, Mariah, Malia, and Jameson Black. He is also survived by three sisters, Sonia Davenport, Darlene Giles, and Bonnie Sue Black; two brothers-in-law, Franklin Davenport and Charles Giles; two aunts, Mrs. Josephine Black and Mrs. Kathleen Black; his trusted colleague and dear friend, William Paige, Sr.; wife of 29 years, Kendall Black; and many loving cousins, extended family, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 2023, at Affinity Funeral Service, 8074 Mechanicsville Tnpk, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Interment will be private.

You will be missed my FRIEND!
Our condolences and prayers to our family. Jimmy Jr. was always the same (loving, kind and genuine). Just like Uncle Jimmy, could make you laugh until you cried. Nice memories of yesteryears💝. Looking forward to the grand reunion via the resurrection of our dear loved ones (Acts 24:15).

To my friends, the Black Family:
I am seldom at a lost for words but the lost of a dear friend tends to make this extremely difficult. I can only encourage each of you to cling to the great memories to help fill the void in your lives. My prayer is that Jimmy, Jr. had that serious conversation with our Heavenly Father that bought peace to his soul. I also pray that we will all see that smile again when God reunites all his children on that special day. Until then know that God will wipe all tears away and bring joy back to you. Much love and many prayers.

I will always remember you and my dad in the garage. Y’all were as thick as thieves. You will be missed greatly. God bless the family. Prayers to each of you.
To the family: I have not seen my cousin in a long time, but when we were face to face, he always had that great smile. I wish you all to gain strength in all the good times you shared together. May God bless you all.
Sincerest sympathies to the family. Prayers for comfort and strength during this trying time.
Sincere condolences to the Black family for your loss. Jimmy Jr. was such a nice person and will be remembered by the big smile he always had. Praying God gives you peace and understanding to get you through this trying time.
Dear Family,
We are so sorry for the loss of Jimmy Jr.
Death is truly our enemy. We weren’t meant to die. How thankful we can be to know our Savior Jesus Christ has paid the price to redeem mankind. God’s Word tells us the dead will live again.
Now Jesus is in heaven and has been given “all authority . . . in heaven and on the earth.” Thus, he is in position to fulfill the promise that “all those in the memorial tombs” will be raised to life with the prospect of remaining alive forever.—Matt. 28:18; John 5:25-29.
We are all feeling the pain of losing Jimmy Jr. He always displayed love and respect to Uncle Sherman and I.
Jesus will soon resurrect billions to enjoy life forever on a paradise earth. He said that “all those in the memorial tombs”—even those who may seem to be forgotten but are in God’s memory—will be resurrected.—John 5:28, 29.
Love you all,
Aunt Kathleen
