
James Franklin Utley
February 22, 1936 – March 22, 2023
James Franklin Utley, Junior, 87, of Blackstone, Virginia, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
Jimmy worked for A & P Food Store where he was the assistant manager. He was a faithful member of Jonesboro Baptist Church where he sang in the choir. He had a beautiful baritone voice and was frequently called on to sing solos at Jonesboro and churches in the surrounding area. He also sang at weddings, including those of his children. He was an Eagle Scout and served in the US Army National Guard. Jimmy enjoyed fishing in his younger years, and he was an avid reader. He was a devoted husband, son, father, grandfather, and brother, who was proud to have been named the father of the year by the Blackstone Jaycees in 1968.
He is survived by his children, Nancy Derrick (Bob), Diana Perkinson, Kathy Foote (Willy), and Jaye Utley (Tammy), brother, George Utley, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Eva Utley, his wife, Velma Matthews Utley, sister Joanne Utley Wynn, daughter Linda Mulligan, and son Donnie (Perky) Perkinson.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Jonesboro Baptist Church, 1955 Jonesboro Church Rd., Blackstone, VA 23824. Those wishing to honor his life can make a donation to the Jonesboro Baptist Church music ministry.
