John Lindsey Brewer died peacefully at home on Thursday, March 2, 2023.
John was born on May 3, 1961, in Durham, North Carolina to the late Charles L. Brewer and Peggy T. Brewer. After growing up in Durham, John moved to Richmond, Virginia, in 1982 where he met his wife, Ann, and embarked on a career in golf course maintenance and professional landscaping.
From his many years at premier golf courses to the two decades at James River Nurseries, John was passionate and particular about his work. He loved the outdoors and even planted nearly 100 trees at their new home while battling cancer. When not at work, John enjoyed trips to Sandbridge Beach where he liked to surf fish (regardless whether he was catching anything) and listen to his favorite tunes by Jimmy Buffett and Bruce Springsteen. He was also an avid Duke sports fan and took great pleasure in taunting Tarheels.
John was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Peggy; and his beloved cat, Boomer. He is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Ann; and their son, Derrick, and his wife, Sarah Anne. He is also survived by his brother, Stephen W. Brewer and his wife, Hannah, of Norfolk, Virginia; his sister, Janet B. Scearce of Durham, North Carolina; and his aunt, Jenny Teal Kakalec, also of Durham, North Carolina.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 8050 St. Paul’s Church Road, Hanover, VA 23069. A private graveside service is planned in Sutherlin, VA at Arbor Baptist Church.
