John Ressler
August 5, 1945 – July 27, 2023
John Ressler, 77, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away on July 27, 2023, at Manorhouse Assisted Living in Short Pump, Virginia.
John was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on August 5, 1945. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1967 and remained a proud Oregon Duck all his life. He was drafted into the US Army on July 7, 1967, and was honorably discharged on February 8, 1969. He then started working for the Internal Revenue Service in San Francisco, California and moved throughout the US as he progressed in his career. He became the director of the IRS Service Center in Covington, KY, in 1993 and retired from the IRS in Washington DC in 2005. Not one to relax, John became a consultant for USAID and traveled internationally for another seven years before settling down in Shallotte, North Carolina, where he golfed often, rooted on the Washington Nationals, and entertained family and friends. He took pride in his mancave where he cranked up his vast music collection and showed numerous movies on his 100-inch TV while making time to swim laps each day in “his” pool at the Rivers Edge Amenities Center. While in Shallotte, he helped found the Rivers Edge Veterans Association and was quite proud of their community service work and the scholarships they provided.
Survivors include wife, Jackie Ressler; children, Steve Ressler, Sarah Ressler Wright, and Megan Quinn; their spouses, Elizabeth Vaquera, Chad Wright, and Adam Sarnowski; and grandchildren Nicolas and Adrian Ressler, Huxley and Rosalind Wright, and Eamon and Poppy Sarnowski.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks memorial donations be sent to Rivers Edge Veterans Association. Please make checks out to Rivers Edge Veterans Association and send in care of Nick Micale, 495 Laurel Valley Drive, Shallotte, NC, 28470.
Gonna miss my unofficial Uncle. Go Ducks!

Jackie, my heart goes out to you and your family. I am so sorry. I still smile hearing John singing on the golf course., one of his many talents. You are in my thoughts, dear friend.
Our love and prayers are with the family during this time. I will miss our exchanges of tasteless holiday cards and receiving his emails with jokes. Rest in Peace Uncle John. You are loved and will be greatly missed.
John invited me into his Golf Group when we lived in Rivers Edge, (very king of you John) as we played many courses in the area. We enjoyed the same type of classic Rock and John shared many of his CD,s with me. Dinners at Jackie and John’s were always delightful, great food and conversation. He was always at the fitness center as was I for quite some time and he was always very focused on his routine. Sad news for sure, too young John but I’m sure your now still swimming laps in a pool somewhere.
(Very kind of you) is what I meant to type.
Jackie, our hearts go out to you as you try to navigate this loss. You and John gave so much to your community— you, the Rourk Library volunteerism; John, REVA. Such devotion! You , both, will be sorely missed. We wish you peace.
Marilyn and Larry Shapiro.
Dear Jackie,
Sending you and your family thoughts and prayers for love, peace and strength. We will keep John and all of you in our hearts. John always had a smile to give John H and I and we so appreciated his kindness. Please take care and know we are thinking of you.
Farewell my Friend. You have left us way too soon.
I still remember the enthusiastic young man I first met 48 years ago and the friendship that developed from that meeting. The life and social experiences we shared over the years. The start of your family and our inclusion as your children’s Godparents. The many dinners together, the visits and celebrations of major events in our families lives. While the retirement years took us on our separate ways, technology kept us connected..
I played golf today and couldn’t stop thinking of you and how much you loved the game.
Mary and I will miss you. Rest in peace!
Jackie, I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. Sending sympathy to you and your family.
John and I spent many years working together both in the States and Internationally. I will remember his love and devotion for his family, his passion for doing his best at both work and play and the many good times we had together. This world has lost a good man. My condolences to Jackie and the family.
