Jon Mark Griffin
Sept. 12, 1954 – June 12, 2020
Jon Mark Griffin died peacefully at home on June 12, 2020. He is survived by Sammie, his beloved wife of 24 years; his sister Susan, brother-in-law Cliff, and their children Matt, Mike, Amy, and Cliff IV; and his brother Exum (Griff), sister-in-law Betsy, and their children August and Katie.
Mark was a good man – kind and generous to all, and a loving, dedicated husband. A sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 27 years, he helped many other men recover from alcoholism.
Mark loved his animals, the Minnesota Vikings, and Becky’s Restaurant, which he owned and operated with Sammie for seven years. He and Sammie have been helped immensely by Rickey Giles, a family friend, throughout Mark’s illness.
A service honoring Mark’s life will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 828 Buford Road, Richmond VA 23235, on Saturday, June 20, at 5pm. All are invited to a catered dinner afterward (at 7pm) at Mark and Sammie’s home – 2848 Ballsville Road, Powhatan VA 23139.
Thank you, Lord, for the gift of Jon Mark Griffin to us in this world. I know You have welcomed him home with great love, and he is beholding You now with tremendous joy.
Mark we are going to miss you.
Missing Mark! Knowing him has been an honor.
Mark, you will be greatly missed by the many people who were beyond blessed to have had you in their lives. I know … I am one.
Rest in peace, my brother! I met Mark for the first time when he was running a small business out of an old WW2 era barracks in Manchester NH during the Presidential campaign of 1980. Over the door was a sign which read: “Republican’s Entrance.” There was a hole in the wall next to that door bearing a sign which read: “Democrat’s Entrance.” While we were laughing about this he told me the where the “Ted Kennedy Entrance” was but I can’t repeat it here. I could write for hours, but I sure miss the Marco, love you man!
