Obituary message
AVERSANO, Joseph K. “Joe” 80 of Glen Allen peacefully departed this life on June 13, 2017. He was preceded in death by parents Joseph A. and Anne W. Aversano. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Carolyn Aversano and their two children, Andrea Casey (Bill) and Kenneth Aversano (Ginger Turner) and grandchildren Ryan Casey and Sarah Casey. He is also survived by brother Richard A. Aversano and sister Marie Aversano Nalbone. Joe was born in Trenton, NJ on December 16, 1936 and raised in Levittown, PA. After graduating from high school he proudly served in the U.S. Navy before attending Rider University in Lawrenceville, NJ where he earned a B.A. in Business Administration. Joe joined the US. Department of Defense shortly after graduation and in 1967 joined the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s regional office in Philadelphia. In 1971 he relocated his young family to Richmond as part of a team to establish HUD’s presence in Virginia. After 35 years with HUD Joe retired as Director for the Virginia Regional Office. One of Joe’s greatest passions in life was golf. During his entire adult life, and until he was no longer able, Joe played golf every Saturday and Sunday. After retirement he secured his dream retirement job as a course Marshall at Hunting Hawk Golf Course. Joe loved coaching baseball and softball when his children were young and was always an avid sports fan. Joe will be remembered for his easy going demeanor, love of family, sense of humor and quick wit and of course, his passion for golf. Visitation will be held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church at 4491 Springfield Road, Glen Allen, Va. on Monday, June 19 from 1:00 to 2:00 with a service and Interment to follow. Family would also like to thank the dedicated and professional staff at Mary’s Home Away from Home Assisted Living in Henrico for their loving, supportive and attentive care for Joe in his final days.
RIP Joe, a wonderful man always in life, your place is waiting next to our Lord. Love you dear brother in law.
Joe was the first person to welcome me “aboard ” on my first day at HUD, and was my good friend ever since. I have nothing but fond memories of Joe. Rest In Peace my good friend.
Sad to hear. RIP Joe. You always made my days working for you very colorful. You taught me a lot about HUD and you always where there to lend a hand to help me grow and to see my potential. I also enjoyed running into you at the golf course. You always smiled when you helped me with my clubs and cart, even saying I had a pretty good swing.
Joe was my first supervisor when I came to the Department from graduate school. He was a great guy to work for and I really enjoyed his sense of humor and insight. I have many fond memories of my conversations with Joe, Stewart Seiler, and John LeVay about “the old days”. I know his quality of life in the years after his retirement was not the best. May you rest in peace now my friend.
I met Joe in 1972 when I joined the staff in the HUD Richmond Field Office and he was one of the Mabagers who welcomed me back, in 1995, to the Virginia State office after my 15 years in the Baltimore office. We learned and grew a lot together over the years and I value the time that we shared. My condolences to the family.
The Wisdom and Grace of God comforted you through every turn of life. He who knows all and sees all, saw you through to the end. But His Mercy and Grace did not stop there, for it continues into “Eternal Life.” rest in the Peace of Christ our Lord Jesus my friend and colleague.
