June’s life was filled with love and heartache, success and failure, adventure and solitude – all of which helped to form her into the amazing woman we knew and loved.
She grew up in Church Hill during the Great Depression, married her childhood sweetheart Whit Adams, and enjoyed a good life together as they raised their four children. After a long-term illness in 1979, Whit passed away leaving June as a single mother. She worked as a legal secretary and also helped to run the family bakery to provide for her family. Then in 1982 she was blessed to meet and marry Herman Maddox and began a new life adventure with him. They had many amazing experiences together and were affectionately known as Ma & Pa to the grandchildren. Herman passed away in 2011 and June found herself widowed again. Being determined to continue to live life to the fullest, she made every effort to cherish each moment and each person in her life.
Her first love was reading, and throughout her life she was often seen with a huge book in her lap, reading while twirling her hair. She also enjoyed fishing and boating, playing cards and board games, going to church, concerts & plays, and working puzzles with family members. She taught herself to drive a car, often drove the family boat and even soloed as an airplane pilot. During her life, she was an owner of Quality Bake Shoppe (40 yrs), a Lt. Colonial in Civil Air Patrol (20 yrs), volunteered at Regional Memorial Hospital (40+ years), was a faithful member of several churches and volunteered at many community events.
Though she accomplished and experienced many wonderful things in this life and collected many beautiful things over time, the love she had for her family and friends and for God were her most treasured possessions. No doubt she is now dancing in heaven, hugging those who paved the way before her and worshipping her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Payne and Ethel Holder; husband, Whitfield Adams Jr; husband, Herman Maddox Jr; grandsons, Jeffrey Adams and Bruce W Adams Jr. She leaves behind four children, Mike Adams, Bruce Adams Sr (Mary), Dianne Cantrell (Ralph), and David Adams; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Starke, Jason Mallory, Nathan Adams, Ryan Adams, Rebekah Mallory, Lauryn O’Shea and Joey Adams; and seven+ great-grandchildren, along with many other family members, friends and colleagues.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Saturday, December 16, 2023, with a reception following at Concord Baptist Church, 15625 Concord Rd, Ruther Glen, VA 22546.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to Concord Baptist Church who loved and cared for June for many years.
