Lawrence “Larry” Ownby Jr, 83 of Henrico, VA passed away Monday, May 15, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Katie Ownby; six siblings, Ruth, Pearl, Charles, Blanche, Priceilla, and Marie; and grandson Cody Hobson. He is survived by his two loving daughters, Afton Ownby, Jessica Ownby, and their mother Brenda Ownby; two bonus daughters, Cheryl Jessie (Ricky), and Jill Campbell(John); a bonus son, James Glenn (Robyn); nine grandchildren, Josiah Laventure, Izak Akers, Elissa Ownby, Ariana Brooks, Caden Ownby-Long, Crystal (Jason) Baker, Ronnie(Rebekah) Motherhead, and Jeffrey Taylor; five great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, Emilie, Kevin, Chloe, and Ronnie Jr.; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
Larry was born in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. When he was a small child his family moved to Cumberland, Virginia on a chicken farm. He was drafted into the Army in 1963 until 1969. While he served in the Army he received a Good Conduct Medal. He was an Expert Rifleman. After the Army, he worked for Ford Motor and became a well-known mechanic and later worked for Philip Morris and Retired. He was a well-known musician and songwriter. He loved playing bluegrass music and fixing up old-timey cars. He was a loving, giving person with many talents. He will be missed by all who loved him.
A viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. with a funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. at Affinity Funeral Service – Mechanicsville Chapel, 8074 Mechanicsville Turnpike, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. Interment will be private at Culpeper National Cemetery.
