Maria Luisa Acosta, 92, of Moseley passed away Friday, September 15, 2023 at Watercrest Ricmond.
Maria, was born in Lares, Puerto Rico. The eldest; at 16, her parents sent her to New York City to live with an aunt and uncle. She was a factory worker, until marrying and staying home to raise her two children. With her tenacious, determined spirit, she improved her English and work skills, eventually getting a job with New York State Off Track Betting.
Upon retiring, she moved to Virginia to be closer to her children and family. At age 65, she purchased her first home in Midlothian, Va., something she was very proud of. She was proud of her Latin heritage, its traditions, customs, food, and music. She had a strong faith, and she was involved in her church, women’s group, and choir. She loved cooking, gardening, singing, and word search puzzles.
Above all she loved family—her own and those who became family by knowing her. She will be deeply missed.
Maria is survived by her children, Myrna Davitt (Patrick) and Alex Acosta (Lorraine); her grandchildren, Angymarie Corrigan (Christopher), Stephanie Green,
Marc Davitt, Ashley Simpkins (Derek) and Andrew Davitt (Joeny). She is also survived by her great grandchildren, Bryce and Briana Davitt, Ryan Corrigan, Nora and Emery Simpkins and Landon, Kennedy and Luke Davitt; her siblings, Gloria Amaro, Lydia Perez, Ana Frontera and Pedro Colon; as well as many, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and great nephews.
Maria was preceded in death, by her parents, Pedro Rodriguez Soto, Mariana Acosta Rosado (Colon); her stepfather, Ramon Colon; and her siblings, Carmen Rodriguez, Ada Colon, Fellicita Collazo, Luis Rodriguez and Rafael Colon.
A viewing will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 21, 2023, with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Bethlehem Baptist Church 9600 Midlothian Tpke, North Chesterfield, VA 23235. Interment will follow in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.
