Mary Burleson Short of Rockville, Va passed into Heaven on Monday, March 18, 2024 at the age of 80.

Mary was the widow of Robert E. Short, Sr. They were married for 35 years and had a blended family. Mary was originally from Spruce Pine,North Carolina where she graduated from Business School. She was first runner-up for Miss Spruce Pine as a teenager. Mary worked for several years as legal secretary and for the Board of Health in Richmond, Va.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Kathy Mergler(David), Lisa Emerling(William) and, also had a middle daughter Kimberley Turner that sadly passed away on September 30,2023 of terminal brain cancer. Mary had seven grandchildren, David Mergler,Jr., Tracy Morauske, Micheal Mergler, Tyler Emerling, Ethan Emerling, Lilly Emerling, and James “Jet” Turner,Jr.;  several great-grandchildren, Lily, Brooklyn, David III, Maddox, Trason, Easton, Izabella and Banks: several step-grandchildren but most importantly were Sarah and Abigail Short as well as their mother Gail Short who helped and loved her very much.

Mary was a secretary for many years, as well as a real estate agent, and later in life decided to pursue a nursing degree. She worked a few years as a nurse at Cedarfield Retirement Community and loved it. It brought her great joy to help those in need. Our mom was a phenomenal baker as well as a cook but baking was her specialty like her “Oohey Gooey Cookies “ and her famous banana pudding. She loved to garden, read, especially the Bible, as well as trips to the beach and the mountains. She truly loved Elvis Presley til her last day. Mary was a devoted pet lover and a loving mom and friend.

A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Berea Baptist Church in Rockville with Pastor John Baldwin performing the ceremony.

Mary was a devoted Christian and a firm believer in Jesus Christ. Our mom was the daughter of John and Roxie Burleson and had three older brothers and one older sister; sister-in-law, Yvonne Burleson, who was like a sister to her. They all preceded her in death.

Our mother was a strong woman who persevered through everything. She was the last of her original family and she leaves behind a legacy full of love, and  laughter.  She was a believer in Jesus Christ and will be missed but never forgotten.

Lastly, in five months our family has lost two instrumental family members that were truly loved but we are comforted by their reunion, and what a beautiful reunion it had to be!

A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 8 at Berea Baptist Church in Rockville with Pastor John Baldwin officiating. Interment will follow at Westhampton Memorial Park.  All family and friends are invited to attend the service.
