Mary Lou Meekins
Feb. 23, 1945 – Jul. 18, 2020
On Saturday, July 18, 2020, Mary Lou Meekins (Wright), mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 75.
Born in Middletown, New York, and a survivor of many obstacles in her childhood, Mary developed a tenacity for perseverance with strength, dignity, grace, and an independence to live her life as personally meaningful as possible. She resided in various states which included New York, California, Colorado, and Virginia.
Throughout her career, Mary mastered the administrative profession with strong multi-tasking skills. She worked for twenty plus years at both the University of California, and Virginia Union University. One of her memorable jobs was working directly for “then” the Mayor of San Francisco, Dianne Feinstein, now Senator of California. This was a professional accomplishment she was most proud of achieving.
With her love for people, Mary’s love for “family” was most intense. Each family member cherishes their own distinct relationship with her. Mary possessed a longing desire to learn about her ancestry lineage. She was enthralled by their journeys and felt compelled to share that information. She has uncovered stories of ancestors that will forever intertwine with the storytelling of family history for generations to come.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by daughter, Kim; brother, Roscoe; twin granddaughters, Michelle and Kelly; niece, Tiffany; two nephews, Lance and Derek; great-grandbaby, Kaycee; sister-in-law, Gayle; and cousins Perre’, Jackie, Warren, “Richard,” and others. Mary will also be forever remembered by her numerous grand-nieces, nephews, extended family, dear friends, and even caregivers she fondly loved and appreciated.
A Cremation Funeral Service in memory of Mary will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 at 2:00 p.m., at Affinity Funeral Service Mechanicsville Chapel, with Pastor Rob Wilson and Prophetess Sherry Wilson officiating.

Kim & Family – I was so sorry to hear about the passing of your mother, Mary Lou (as I use to call her). I loved working with Mary Lou during her time at VUU. She was always a cheerful and happy individual who loved her daughter and those twin girls (Kelly & Michelle). I still have the pictures of the two of them on my desk that she gave to me when they were 9 years old. She would refer to them as her Woo Woos. She loved those girls to the moon and back.
May God bless and grant peace to you and your family during these difficult times.

Kim,
My heart was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Ms. Mary Lou (as I called her although she was younger than me). Your mother was a beautiful lady – not only in looks but she had a beautiful personality that stood out. It was a joy seeing her in her beautiful scarfs and throws. She loved you and your young ladies (Kelly & Michelle) always sharing what they were doing. She will be missed but like me, you will have many wonderful memories to cherish. God bless you and be with you and your family during this very difficult time. Please know that I am hear for you and Stephanie says the same.

Many people come in and out of our lives but only true sisters leave a foot print on our souls. My SISTER OF MA AT, MARY,
had a deep belief in her own dignity, her knowledge of African Culture and Tradition. She made life better for everyone,
a struggle for Freedom and Justice. She shared a benevolent love for the arts and song, I shall always be indebted for music
of ever kind but especially ,,good old time Gospel. Two of her favorites were..”Come On IN the ROOM” and I done ..done.
WHEN she sang it…she invoked the spirit of King Jesus ..deep down in your soul.
That’s why I know she has earned her RITE OF PASSAGE…TAKE YOUR REST MARY…MY SISTER..and ETERNAL LIFE
WITH OUR LORD! Love from..Hadassah and Douglas Faison
I WILL MISS HER very much ,was always good to me , and real good to work with

Mary was the most loving person I had ever met . She was kind and giving. She was my sister- in- law for a time but my love for her never changed. I regret l lost touch. God has her now and I hope to see her again one day.
God bless Mary. She has gone home to rest. She was a dynamic and faithful person. I hope to see her again.
Kim and family. I am so sorry for your loss. I loved “Queen Mary” as I called her. She was a pleasure to work with and always had so much wisdom to offer to me and kind words. She was the best Administrative Assistant, and I learned so much from her. I will miss her greatly. May God continue to keep you and your family during this time.
