Maureen Shelbourne Goode

September 28, 1945 – February 5, 2024

Maureen Shelborne Goode of Midlothian, Virginia passed away on February 5, 2024.  She was born September 28, 1945, in Richmond, Virginia.  Maureen was the only child of Graham and Alma Goode, both deceased.

She is survived by her Goddaughter, Cary Hobson of Metairie, Louisiana.

Maureen was a 1963 graduate of Manchester High School, where she served on the Red Cross Council and Welfare Committee and performed in the Junior Class and Senior Class plays. Following her graduation from Westhampton College in 1967 with a B.A. in Psychology, she was awarded a Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University.

She spent her 50-year social work career in public social services agencies in the greater Richmond area.

As a young adult Maureen mastered the art of applying make-up, and the result was the envy of all her female friends, who also recall that she shopped at La Vogue and had a very stylish wardrobe.

Maureen cherished many traveling adventures, including an excursion to Europe, several cruises, and a skiing trip to Vermont, where she admitted to preferring the apres-ski fun to the actual skiing. She especially enjoyed her annual trips to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras with Cary and her parents, best friend Carol and Kent Hobson, both deceased. Happy times were spent with friends at Emerald Isle and Holden Beach, but although she loved the ocean, she always ordered her favorite meal of steak when dining in the coastal restaurants!

A huge Elvis fan, Maureen made a memorable trip to Graceland. Neil Diamond was a close second favorite.

She absolutely detested vegetables, and although she enjoyed entertaining and making appetizers, in later life she said she no longer cooked, but just assembled food. Her breakfast casserole was a winner!

Friends were blessed to receive gifts that were crafted by Maureen – from decorative accessories to hand-painted stemware.

Bowling in local area leagues was a favorite past-time until her health no longer allowed her to participate. Following a major stroke, the last ten years of her life were a struggle.

A celebration of Maureen’s life and 79th Birthday will be held at 2:30 Saturday, September 21, 2024 at Affinity Funeral Service, 2720 Enterprise Parkway, Richmond, Virginia 23294.  Interment will be private.

A long-time cat lover, in later life Maureen found a place in her heart for dogs as well.  Please consider a donation in her memory to a local animal rescue organization.
