In Loving

Richard Eric “Rick” Mathews

December 9, 1960 – February 20, 2024

Richard Eric “Rick” Mathews, 63, passed away on February 20, 2024, in Powhatan, VA. Born on December 9, 1960, in Anniston, AL, Rick was known for his sarcastic wit, strong opinions, and perfectionism; traits that were balanced by a kind, generous heart, and deep appreciation of his friends and loved ones.

Rick is survived by his loving parents, Harold L. Mathews and Shirley B. Mathews of Chesterfield, VA; his sons, Eric and Michael Killen; brothers, Chris and Tracy; several nieces and nephews; and his cats, Oreo and Lily. Additionally, Rick is survived by his many friends who shared his love of motorcycle riding adventures, playing pool, or smoking and swapping stories. These are the people in his life who showed up for him, and vice versa, in large and small ways.

All things motorcycle made Rick happy. Working on them, riding them, talking about them and learning about them with online communities, earning him the nickname “Raider Rick.” Favorite rides were Tail of the Dragon, Maggie Valley, a trip to Colorado, and anywhere with friends. Another favorite pastime was playing in local pool leagues, helping his teams take top honors multiple times. His teammates over the years were a cherished community, (even those who nicknamed him “Pickles”!) Rick was an important member of the family business, Mathews Soil Consultants,Inc. where he found satisfaction in troubleshooting problems no one else could figure out.
