A beloved family man, Richard “Rick” Hugh Roberts was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on November 12, 1953 to Eula Antrim Roberts and Clyde Roberts. While he lived most of his life in Virginia, he fondly recalled childhood years spent among the rolling hills of Pennsylvania, including camping with Boy Scouts, and his family’s trips to Salisbury, North Carolina to spend time with relatives, eat barbeque, and sip Cheerwine.
Rick had a lifelong thirst for knowledge and adventure. He joined the Marines (oorah!) as a young man, where he worked on avionics and appreciated experiencing the world. His love of aviation – and fear of heights – led to earning his pilot’s license and years of telling his kids “with certainty” what planes were flying overhead. He also loved motorcycling, tinkering with his bike, and track days with his son and his friend-turned-brother Michael Melugin.
Rick spent most of his career as a software engineer for Bank of America and found additional passions in finances, human anatomy, martial arts, and history. He also savored traveling with family and close friends.
Family was everything to Rick, and he was everything to his family. He was a devoted husband of 37 years to Melissa Shirey Roberts, an ever-present and committed father to children Kathryn Roberts Hooper and Richard Hugh Roberts II, and a proud father-in-law to chosen children Garret Thomas Hooper and Anne Marie Tomsky. Rick cherished his time as “Happy Snappy Grandpappy,” or “Snappy” for short, to granddaughters Evelyn and Charlotte Hooper. He created a beautiful life for his family, encouraging Christmas songs year-round, frequently sporting a penguin hat for his grandgirls, and ensuring everyone knew how special they were to him. He also cared deeply for his siblings, R. Dean Roberts, Clyde Roberts Jr. (pre-deceased), and V. Sue Roberts, his nieces and nephews, and his cousins.
Rick died peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024. A private celebration of life will be held at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Rick’s name to the Virginia Home, 1101 Hampton Street, Richmond, VA 23220.
