Richard “Junior” Southard
July 9, 1951 – September 20, 2022
Mr. Richard “Junior” Southard, 71, of Richmond Virginia, loving husband, Father, Pop, brother, uncle, and friend, went to be with the Lord on September 20, 2022. He was greeted at Heaven’s gate by his wife, Janice Southard, his parents Robbie Lee Southard and Aubrey Andrew Southard; and brothers, David Lee Southard and Aubrey “Sonny” Southard.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Casey Cason; his son and daughter-in-law, Casey and Taera Southard; his grandchildren, Trinity Stevenson, Caleb, Olivia and Maxton Southard, Maddie and Paisley Cason; brothers Robert and Michael Southard; sisters Thelma Brooks and Mary Stroud; and his closest nephew, Andrew Southard.
Junior led a successful career as an entrepreneur in the grocery industry. He owned and operated Fresh To Frozen Grocery Salvage off of Midlothian Turnpike where you would find him daily bagging groceries and making announcements over the loud speaker. He was known to have high standards and build strong relationships with suppliers, employees, and customers. He loved to serve the community and work in partnership with his son.
If you knew Junior, you knew he was always the life of the party. He always wanted to have a good time. Through his charisma and full of life personality, he met his wife, Janice ‘Snookie’ Southard. The two spent their greatest moments at the family river house at Sunken Meadows in Claremont, VA and later in life enjoying every moment with their grandchildren. Junior’s favorite things included the annual summer family beach trip, a good Bloody Mary, family game nights, fried oysters, cherry pie, enjoying a cigar in the garage, and being the best husband, father, Pop, brother, uncle, and friend, anyone could ask for. He treasured every moment with his grandchildren and loved being called Pop.
We have always called our dad a superhero, and even as adults, still see him that way. Always there, always so strong. Through it all he has been our rock and taught us to enjoy every moment life has to offer. A father like you is extremely rare, we miss you greatly, love you Dad.
A Celebration of Life for Junior is planned for Sunday, September 25, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m., at The Grille at Magnolia Green.
The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, cards, etc., please consider a donation to your local food bank.
I will miss Junior at the store when wife and I shop. My mother and Jr’s mother were best friends when we were very young (me 73). He remembered me when he was still at Salvage Barn.
We played in the dirt at his family’s house on Warwick Rd. Everyone will miss your smiling face when they shop at the store. Condolences
to the Family and other friends. RIP Jr.
I met Junior through the company I worked for and through that working relationship we became great friends. Junior was a kind person and liked by so many.. I cherish our talks and the time we spent together. I am going to miss him. I pray God’s continued blessings over his family.
Somewhere between 35 and 40 years I shopped at Juniors store or where he worked before he opened his store. He was kind and never to busy to stop and chat. I will miss him as many others will too. My Condolences to his family.
