Roger Neil Brookshire
January 2, 1941 – October 21, 2023
Roger Neil Brookshire, 82 years young, embarked on his long-term voyage to the seas on Tuesday, October 21, 2023, in Richmond, Virginia.
Roger was born in Caldwell County on January 2, 1941, to the late Millard Clark Brookshire and Jewel Anderson Brookshire. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Ronald Brookshire.
Roger is survived by his loving daughters, Caroline Brookshire Watkins (husband, Ray) of Castle Hayne, NC, and Kendall Leigh Brookshire of Glen Allen, VA. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Savannah and Layne Watkins. Roger is fondly remembered by his sisters, Gwen Humphries (husband, Dean) of Concord, NC, and Elaine Crisp (husband, Steve) of Lenoir, NC.; and several special nieces and nephews, aunts, and an uncle.
Roger fought a brave battle against a rare form of skin cancer and Parkinson’s disease, never losing his faith in God along the way. He was a sailboat captain and his heart always belonged on a sailboat, with the melodies of Jimmy Buffett playing in the background. He valued every person he knew in his life with genuine intention, and his spirit was as adventurous as the open sea.
A celebration of Roger’s life will be held in the coming months. The date and location of the event will be determined and shared with family and friends. At this time, there are no funeral arrangements, but in the coming months, there will be a celebration of life in Roger’s honor.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible nurses, doctors, and staff at VCU Health and Massey Cancer Center, who provided unwavering support during this challenging time. Special thanks also go to the staff at Bon Secours Community Hospice House and Transitions Hospice for their compassionate care.
In honor of Roger’s deep affection for four-legged friends, memorial funds would be gratefully accepted by Richmond Animal Care and Control. It was there that he adopted his best Shih Tzu friend, Ramsey, who brought him immeasurable joy and companionship.
As we remember Roger, let us celebrate his adventurous spirit! May he find eternal peace on the endless seas, his sails forever filled with the winds of love and remembrance.
