In Loving

Roni-Marie Wright

June 27, 1955 – March 15, 2024

Roni (Grillo) Wright, 68, of Aylett VA passed peacefully at home on Friday, March 15, 2024.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Wright; her daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Andy Myers; her sisters, Rosemary Cecil, Paula Feeney Ballo and Raymond Bell; and one grandchild Sadie.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tony and Thelma Grillo; her maternal grandmother, Charlotte Devlin Sullivan; and her paternal grandparents, Giacomo and Raphael Grillo.

Roni was born in Newport, RI before growing up in Fairfax VA. She met the love of her life – Jim – at Baskin Robbins in Springfield and was married at 19.  She and Jim lived in Goldsboro and Greensboro NC before returning to northern Virginia to start and raise a family.  Her life’s desire was to be a good wife and mother.  She did both exceptionally well!

At the age of 33, she was diagnosed with stage 3 liver disease and was told the only cure was a liver transplant (crazy for a person who never drank alcohol much!).  At 38 she received a liver transplant.  For 30 years Roni was the “poster child” for liver transplantation.  And those 30 years provided the blessing of many special memories, but many more regular everyday memories. Many of her fondest memories were of family vacations in Hilton Head Island, SC, simply walking her dog, reading a book, or watching her daughter (and most recently her granddaughter) play soccer.

After 30 years, Roni needed another liver transplant and was blessed to have a living donor step forward (among over a dozen selfless people who explored being her living donor).  Although the second liver transplant didn’t have the result we all wanted, the selfless love of our living donor will never be forgotten!

Roni lived in Glen Allen for 15 years and for the past few years has lived in Aylett.  She was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Glen Allen.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, March 25, 2024, at Affinity Funeral Home at 2720 Enterprise Pkwy, Richmond, VA. An additional period of visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2024, with a celebration of her life to follow at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road, Glen Allen VA. Inurnment will immediately follow in the Columbarium.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be made to Hume-Lee Transplant Center, Richmond VA [] or King William County Animal Shelter.
