Todd January, affectionately known as “Big Todd,” of Mechanicsville, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on February 3, 2024.
Todd was born October 29, 1976, in Richmond, Virginia, and lived every moment to the fullest. He had an incredible zest for life and a magnetic personality that made everyone who was blessed to know him feel seen, accepted, and loved. His energetic, upbeat, and humorous demeanor was amplified when he became a husband to the love of his life and best friend, Sarah, in 2007, and father to his precious son, Todd Jr., also known as “Little Todd,” in 2011.
Todd served faithfully in many roles throughout his life—most notably as everyone’s favorite bus driver in the Broad Rock neighborhood for the outreach ministry he served in for the better part of a decade. What most people didn’t see was the hard work he did behind the scenes: filling dozens of buses with gas, one by one, often before sunrise, so thousands of children could come to church and hear about Jesus. For years, he was the first to arrive and the last to leave, which held true in every role he worked.
It would eventually be the same children he bussed to church who would serendipitously help Todd and Sarah cross paths while she was working at an inner-city, after-school program. Every afternoon at 3:35 PM, Sarah and Todd would bashfully blush and wave at each other in passing, but it was the kids they mentored who finally gave both of them the courage to make a move and talk to one another. He was street smart, bursting with uncompromising realism and gritty strength; and she was calm, steady, and book smart: a match made in heaven.
Later in life, he transitioned to restaurant and golf course management. When he wasn’t working, he was either toy hunting with his cherished son, teaching him to fish, or cooking up a five-star gourmet meal for his family and friends. He made sure those around him not only felt loved—but full, in more ways than one. He lived every day as authentically and joyfully as possible, never missing an opportunity to share a laugh, passionately argue a point, or lend a helping hand (sometimes all three at once).
Preceded in death by his younger sister Stacie Alvarado, Todd is survived by his wife, Sarah; son, Todd Jr.; sister Teddi (Joey) Bartlett; his “brother from another mother” and life-long friend Tommy (Shannon) Haskins; as well as a host of family, and friends who were like family.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Oakdale (13497 Ashland Road, Ashland, Virginia) on Sunday, February 18, 2024, at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests a contribution to Little Todd’s college fund: https://myaccount.virginia529.com/pls/prod/twpkwbis.P_wwwlogin?startpage=GIFT &key1=4M09EAO; Gift ID: 4M09EAO
