W. Frances McCauley Flanagan
November 30, 1952 – October 15, 2022
W. Frances (Fran) McCauley Flanagan passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 15, 2022, in Richmond, VA surrounded by her three children, Brandi, Shannon, and Shane.
Fran, the daughter of James and Viola McCauley of Mill Creek, WV, moved to Maryland after graduating from Tygarts Valley High School in 1970. On April 15, 1972, she married William (Bill) James Flanagan, formerly of Valley Head, WV, after which they lived in Maryland and Virginia, meeting great friends along the way. They were married for 20 years before Bill passed away on August 7, 1992. After his passing, Fran continued to raise their three children in Richmond, VA.
Fran was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her loved ones. She loved her trips back home to West Virginia, visiting her brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews, particularly when her visit was to attend the McCauley annual family reunions over July 4th weekends.
As all family and friends can attest to, one of Fran’s favorite things to do was to cook. Everything from her famous Sunday morning ‘country breakfasts’ to her homemade spaghetti sauce and cheesy-greasy meatloaf, to her desserts like peanut butter fudge, German chocolate cake, and pumpkin rolls, everyone had at least one favorite.
Her family takes comfort knowing that she is now in heaven with Bill, as well as parents James and Viola McCauley, and siblings Steven, Kathryn (Kat), Connie, and Donald (Donnie).
She is survived by her three children, Brandi Flanagan, Shannon (Larry) Bogan, and Shane (Alana) Flanagan; seven grandchildren, Katie, Brandon, Zachary, Brianna, and McKenna (Bogan), and Declan and Raeghan (Flanagan), all of whom who affectionately call her “Gaga”; 11 brothers and sisters; and many nieces and nephews.
Fran will be missed by all who knew and loved her she was a joy to be around . I’ll miss talking to her on the phone we kept in touch with each other until she fell ill. I love you little sister!
Fran has made an amazing legacy with her children! Thank you for sharing them with us.
Thank you Fran for making me a part of your family as I was growing up. I loved your weekend breakfasts, greasy cheesy meatloaf Ann’s German chocolate cake! You will be missed and always loved.
Thank you Fran for making me a part of the family as I was growing up. I loved your weekend breakfast, greasy, cheesy meatloaf(which I make but not as good as you) and German chocolate cake. They were the best!
You will missed and always loved.
Brandi, Shannon and Shane, thoughts, prayers and hugs to you all.
Thank You Fran for all the great memories I have while growing up, my parents would pack us up to come visit you and Bill while you all lived in the Maryland area, Dad & Bill would go fishing while you, mom, me & my brother Tim would go spend the day at beach. Those Coca-Cola days were awesome with board walk fries.
I miss you and Bill but most of all you are now with your love of your life. Love You
Bill and I are so sorry for the loss of a mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Frances and I share some of the same family and grew up in the same town. I remember her with fondness. May God wrap his arms around her family and hold them tight during this time of sadness and loss.
My thoughts and prayers are with the Flanagan and McCauley family. My memories of Frances are filled with her laughter, her loyalty and her love.
I only met Fran a couple of times but know how special she was because she was so loved by her children. I hope that they can find comfort in the many memories they have of her and find peace that she is in a better place. My condolences to the entire McCauley Flanagan family.
I am so sorry for the loss of your mom and the pain it brings. She was an amazing woman for raising three wonderful kids. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.
